In my mind, this approach relieves the student of completing the difficult part of the problem. Drawing diagrams that are reliable enough to compare, say, 3/8 and 1/3 can be quite difficult. I'm wondering if people who teach this topic have ways they have students figure this part out on their own.
Which fraction is greater?
Today I was working with a third grade student who is just learning to compare fractions. I've included a picture of the worksheet we were doing. Given two fractions, he had to determine which fraction was greater, or if they were equal. The book provided a picture for each problem, so all he had to do was compare the area of the shaded regions.
