I asked my 9th grade geometry students to create a drawing out of line segments and then to find the equations to create their picture. All graphs were made using the online graphing calculator Desmos. The students made some really creative drawings. Enjoy!

I set my calculus students the task of finding the volume of a yellow zucchini. A zucchini has circular cross sections, and its diameter varies along the length of the squash. If you cut the zucchini into several discs, you can add up the volume of these cylindrical discs to approximate the total volume. Essentially, I am asking my students to approximate the integral $$\int_0^{\text{length(zucchini)}}\text{cross-sectional area(}x\text{)}dx$$ by hand. We can also find the volume by submerging the squash underwater. We we able to achieve a percent error under 2%. |
