Up until now whenever I shifted the front gear to its highest setting, the chain would fall of the outside. I learned that the two gleaming screws above are what to adjust to fix that problem. Now the chain doesn't fall off. Throughout this project I'm trying to be okay with not understanding everything there is to know about the bike. I'm taking deliberate steps along these lines to limit what I learn: when I cleaned the chain today, I left the chain on the bike rather than taking it off for a more thorough clean. It was a lot easier that way.

I was able to fix the rear tire rubbing on the frame. All I had to do was readjust the wheel and make sure the nuts were really tight. After that I was able to take it for its first ride in years! Here's what she looked like. My next step is to clean up my chain and gears and to adjust the derailers.
Armed with some new tools and a can of WD-40, I decided to attack the bolt holding the real wheel on. Once I got my new wrenches on the task, it was actually quick work to get the rear tire/tube replaced. The bike with her new tires is below! After I got the rear wheel on, I found that the new tire rubs against the frame, so I'll have to work on getting that better lined up. These are the brand new tires and wheels I got for my wife's bike. I'm excited to get them on. I already have some tire irons and a pump, so I should be good to go. I was able to get the old tire and tube off the front wheel and, with some fumbling, get the new ones on. When I went to put the front tire back on, there was some issue as to how to position what looks like a toothed washer, but I think I got it right, with the tooth in the hole. When I went to get the rear wheel off, I found that the nut was on too tight. (The bike has been sitting for several years.) I leveraged all my weight against it and had gloves on my hands to protect them, but still couldn't get the nut off. My next step is to invest in a better wrench or at least some WD-40. |
