Try this 9th grade geometry problem out.
The fifth question requires students to apply something they already know to an unfamiliar situation, and I was eager to hear their thoughts. When I asked for answers, I was proud of their willingness to share their ideas. The three possible solutions to question 5 they gave were
- It could be AB or AC. I need more information.
- Side AB is the smallest, because it is opposite 30°, which is the smallest angle in the picture.
- Side AC is the smallest, because it is smaller than side AB when you look at the triangle on the right.
